Presenting the leave-behind.
Way too many new business pitches use endless numbers of PowerPoint slides, each filled with multiple bullet points and long complete sentences. In other words, they're presenting the leave-behind.
That’s a problem because the “trap” is that you have to read aloud every word on the screen. If you don’t, the prospect will . . . and, in doing so, will “disconnect” from what you’re saying and become confused.
Plus, reading something that's on a screen makes the presenter look incompetent since they appear to need the “crutch” of having their “script” put up in large type on the wall.
The very best new business presentations are like plays (and most Broadway actors don’t use a lot of PowerPoint). Just once, try presenting without any words on the screen at all (and if that’s too frightening, then use this rule: never have more than 8 words on the screen at one time.) That will enable every presenter to become a more compelling actor.
