Sumitomo-led team showcases proposed trains for Honolulu Rail Transit Project

Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA) and its partners Mitsubishi Heavy Industries of America, Inc. (MHIA), KinkiSharyo International, LLC (KI), Thales Transport & Security, Inc. and Wasa Electrical Services, Inc. collectively known as Honolulu Rail For Growth (HRFG), are participating in a bid for the proposed $250 million Honolulu High-Capacity Transit Corridor Project.

The Honolulu Rail for Growth team is one of three teams bidding to serve as the core systems prime contractor to supply the vehicles and provide systems integration, automatic train controls and electrical services as well as the operations and maintenance of the project. Loomis-ISC has been chosen as the local agency to represent the team during the bidding process.

“We are thrilled to be participating in this bid and believe very strongly that we bring a unique mix of expertise and proven experience to this landmark project in Hawaii’s history. It is an exciting time to be participating in a local project that is so in tune with the realignment of national priorities to emphasize green solutions, the creation of sustainable job opportunities and the transfer of skills and technology to the local workforce,” said Gino Antoniello, Vice President of Transportation Systems and Equipment, for Sumitomo Corporation of America.

The HRFG team recently participated in the 2009 Honolulu Rail Transit Symposium, showcasing its proposed trains in an impressive display that included a life-size mock-up of a train compartment, videos, photographs, a small-scale model of the train and actual seats for attendees to test out.

Together, the team brings over a century of experience providing state-of-the-art rail solutions around the world. The team’s most recent and most visually stunning and technologically sophisticated project is the Dubai Rapid Link (DURL). Upon completion the Dubai Rapid Link will be the largest, fully automatic driverless train system in the world.
