A Momentous April: Loomis-ISC Celebrates Passage of Civil Unions Bill and BBB Torch Award
After a nail-biting wait in the gallery of the Hawaii State Capitol on Thursday April 29, the House pulled HB444 --the civil unions bill-- out of the limbo to which it had been consigned without a recorded vote in January.
Calling it a “euphemism for same sex marriage” Bishop Larry Silva, aligning the Church with the evangelical right in the form of the Hawaii Family Forum, had written to all Catholics and to legislators repeatedly since January, urging them to kill the bill as they had previously.
Tambry Young. Co-chair of Equality Hawaii and Suzanne King, Treasurer, of the newly formed Citizens for Equal Rights engaged Loomis-ISC to help them in the most recent phase of the effort to resurrect HB444. The agency continues to work with them and other pro-equality and democracy groups, community leaders, faith leaders and heterosexual allies to keep the spotlight on HB444, garner more public support, dispel myths and encourage the Governor to let the bill pass into law. She has until July 6 to exercise her veto.
